DEMOCRACY

Broadly describing, Democracy is government of the people, by the people and for the people.

Democracy is built on the ideology of equality and right to choose and elect. In democracy the people are the supreme source of power. The Greeks were the first to use the concept of democracy to choose their representatives. The word ‘democracy’ is a combination of two words ‘demos’, which means people and ‘monarchy’ means rule. In a democratic nation it’s the citizen who elect their representatives and their governing charge. According to a research, not all citizens are fully aware of politics. Does this research prove that people are indifferent between their choices when they participate in an election? The government is subject to change after five year. They have to face the election after five-year term. Another disadvantage is that mob can influence people. Popular candidates easily gather votes from population at large, and people may vote in favor of a party under the effect of the majority. Democracy appears to be the most popular option when it comes to choose a form of government. It brings many opportunities that would be unavailable in dictatorship. In India there is federal form having both a government at the center responsible to the parliament. India got freedom in 1947 after the British rule. The first election on the basis of universal adult franchise was held in 1952 but at this time people were unable to grasp the concept of democracy. Majority of the population of India was illiterate and were not so familiar with the politics of that time that resulted into very less participation into first elections of 1952. Quiet a few understood the difference between the British rule and the new leaders. For them Independence came with a new government and a new ruler.

Democracy is broadly classified into two categories namely: direct and indirect democracy.
In direct democracy the people elect the head of state through direct consensus or elections whereas in case of indirect democracy the government is form by people’s representative elected as members of Parliament and representative choose the prime minister. At the state level the people directly elect the members of legislature and they choose the chief minister.

The primary features of Indian democracy are equality and liberty.
