Reservation in india, a boon or a bane?

Reservation has spread like a virus among the Indian Government, Constitution, and most importantly, the citizens of India. Being a general category student, the first thing that comes to my mind when i hear the word ‘reservation’ is a big “NO!” and a frowning face. For the people who enjoy the benefits of reservation, the reaction is completely contradictory.

If we turn the pages of history, we will see the origin of the reservation system. It all started when the constitution was being framed only as a clause, which was to be removed once the oppressed class were uplifted. Initially, it was for 10 years, but thanks to our politician who kept on extending this clause for their own selfish interests.

Due to the reservation system the society has become very unfair. The scenario is such, that a sixty-per center is the boss of a 90-per center. I know that marks does not always matter in jobs, other things like personality and a good command over a required language is also essential but marks should certainly be an important criteria for jobs and posts people hold in an institution. Very recently, there has been a case where the Jat community demanded reservation. They were going on damaging public properties, private institutions and burning and looting malls and other small shops in the state of Haryana. I ask, why so much violence?

I definitely do not say that the reservation system is only a bane for the society. yes, it has it’s brighter side too. It has helped our society, it has brought the oppressed class to higher levels. But, they have misused this system greatly. Due to so much the violence the Government has finally agreed to give reservation to the Jat community, but this whole incident made me realise one thing, only illiterate people can demand literacy in such an illiterate way.

  2. Isn't India a democracy? why are people solely responsible? isn't the government even responsible to effectively accommodate the issues and insure fair reservation?

  3. What is your blog post about? You have mentioned the context in which reservation have been adopted and immediately jumped to your conclusions. How are they linked? What do you think about the 10 year rule? Were the purposes set out by the constitution makers met? If not, what kind of alternatives are feasible in a constitutional system?
