General Comments on the 4Ms Assignment

Dear Students,

The analysis regarding 4Ms is not adequate but a few students have done a really good job responding to the question: Does the composition of your own national parliament show that it
is dominated numerically by the ‘four Ms’ – middle-aged, middleclass, majority group, males? What are the implications of your conclusion? (Newton & Deth, 150)

Several students have just culled out the date provided by me, which is not useful as the total data is already present. With some simple operations one can look at the summaries of data easily, as was shared in the class. For those students interested in how it was done, Excel has an option of creating a Pivot table which can help us to analyze the data according to the categories we need, for example, by gender.

Almost all the students have made an attempt to categorize the MPs from your state into different classes, but one is not sure how you have made such categories as middle-class, upper middle class etc. You should define what a particular 'class' means. For example, 5-50 lakh rupees per year defined a middle class. If so, how did you arrive at this figure. Is this definition used by the governmental agencies, by international community, which has defined poverty as 'Dollar a Day' (now 1.25 USD).

Once you have defined the categories, you should let us know your source where you have gathered the information about these categories.

Finally, only 2 or 3 students have made an effort at answering the implications of your findings which is essential as defining data is not enough. One has to make sense and contextualize it for better utility.

PS: You can collect your assignments in the next class.

Rajdeep.
