Jats Protect against National Diversity and Unity

Jats Protect against National Diversity and Unity

The Last week of Feb. , 2016 was the blackest period in the history of Haryana State which had so far been known for its simple and hardworking people of all communities living together with no communal harmony.  Violence and clashes did occur and were often taking place in the other Sates for communal and the other reasons. Though agitations have been taking place for various causes in the state as well but it never took  so ugly and inhuman turn various commercial places were set on fire, millionaires overnight made paupers, Traffic jams, stranded thousands of people for couple of days at places which is strange to them, many with no money or resources to fend or to feed   themselves.  Serious patients moving out for the treatments to bigger cities were left suffering in pain.  Small children were crying due to hunger.  Unfortunate people on the road were caught unaware.  They were dragged out and beaten., their  female companions humiliated, dragged to fields and they were ganged raped. They were left there with clothes torn in the dark hours. Any one would shudder just on the imagination of innocent travellers bleeding on the roads, patients and children crying for help, ladies gang raped, whole life belongings of the helpless business people burning before their eyes and they overnight reduced to the rank of paupers.

More un-precedented was that when this reckless and lawlessness was spreading all-round, administrations, the police, the army called to the handle the emergency looked the other way quietly and helplessly.  The public wonder struck and shocked was amazed at the inept handing of so serious a law and order problem.  Their faith in the administration in the administration was badly shaken.  Even some of the police personnel were also a party to this of awful state  of affairs.

An other unprecended matter news flashed on media that the political advisor of the last chief minister was heard on tape to inclining the people of the districts asking them why they were not acting on the lines of happenings in Rothak – the epicenter of the violence and also the home place of the same Chief Minister.

Again unprecedented but logical was the reaction of common people who not only threw shoes at him but he also was not even allowed to enter Rothak and was forced to go back to Delhi.  Even the administration, advised the ex Chief Minister not to enter Rothak. How inglorious that a political party could come down to such a low level that one of its most important functionaries of the status of chief minister and his assistant were found behind such hateful law and order breakdown and No higher leader of the party uttering a word except actively playing the role of opposition party to the condemn and not jump in the act for the help of the people.

There had been precedents of riots on communal basis but it is unheard in the history that people of one caste chose to demolish people of other castes of the same religion.

One silver living in this most unfortunate episode was that many good Samaritans and organizations jumped in all places to provide food, shelter, and all help to the stranded and affected people. These people worked day and night to stand by their unlucky brothers. It is on the shoulder of such virtuous people that society stands.

Coming to the facts, it started with the demand for reservation of Jats in backward category Whether genuine or not, was a matter of debate, which could have been sorted out peacefully. Harsh measures like gheroing the political leaders, their residences, Vidan Sabha or Lok Sabha, could be an other choice.  They could have held meetings and processions to win the support of the common people to achieve their goal.

By no stretch of imagination their acts of violence can ever be justified. A country, which could win its independence from British by peaceful means, its people now resorting to such cruel behavior towards their own people could never be dreamt of.  What had the trains and buses done which were burnt causing a loss of about 35 thousand crores to the nation.  Their own money paid by the way of taxes was burnt uselessly, pushing Haryana and its growth back by decades.  Haryana which was taken as kala pani of joint Punjab, with its hard work, labour and planning had ranked itself to one of the top position, was pulled down by such reckless people, sponsored by irresponsible politicians letting loose the anti-social elements to have a "free for all" show.

The danger is not over but is still looming over the State. It has only been postponed for few weeks. If a solution is not found, it may stage a come back with vengeance, may be in other states as well.

Let us pray Jats see to reason, the Government acts swiftly and wisely so that the calamity does not show its ugly face again.

General Comments on the 4Ms Assignment

Dear Students,

The analysis regarding 4Ms is not adequate but a few students have done a really good job responding to the question: Does the composition of your own national parliament show that it
is dominated numerically by the ‘four Ms’ – middle-aged, middleclass, majority group, males? What are the implications of your conclusion? (Newton & Deth, 150)

Several students have just culled out the date provided by me, which is not useful as the total data is already present. With some simple operations one can look at the summaries of data easily, as was shared in the class. For those students interested in how it was done, Excel has an option of creating a Pivot table which can help us to analyze the data according to the categories we need, for example, by gender.

Almost all the students have made an attempt to categorize the MPs from your state into different classes, but one is not sure how you have made such categories as middle-class, upper middle class etc. You should define what a particular 'class' means. For example, 5-50 lakh rupees per year defined a middle class. If so, how did you arrive at this figure. Is this definition used by the governmental agencies, by international community, which has defined poverty as 'Dollar a Day' (now 1.25 USD).

Once you have defined the categories, you should let us know your source where you have gathered the information about these categories.

Finally, only 2 or 3 students have made an effort at answering the implications of your findings which is essential as defining data is not enough. One has to make sense and contextualize it for better utility.

PS: You can collect your assignments in the next class.

Thailand's Democracy

Anuraag Taneja
2015-3055

As we all know the NCPO (national council for peace and order) was the twelfth successful coup since the transition from absolute to constitutional monarchy . The rulers and Thai citizens have been locked in a struggle over sovereignty during electoral democracies, dictatorships and gradations. No junta has been prosecuted for seizing powers and each successive coup has made it easier for next junta to rip up the existing constitution. The struggle took  the form of  color coded politics between the populist democratic red shirts who favored democratic rule and the royalist yellow shirts who favored rule by moral. The struggle between yellow and red shirts hardened and grew violent. Detention, torture, arbitrary arrest and political prosecution took place on a scale not seen since the anti communist dictatorship. Just the night before the military court hearing regarding the renewal of the students detention at Thammasat university  a protest took place. 500-600 people gathered to fold paper cranes, share messages of support for the students and sing songs of solidatary .the crowd did not disperse even after a torrential downpour sent people running for shelter to nearby buildings. When the students walked out behind the bars they promised to lead NDM forward. The NCPO launched a coup in the stated service of returning happiness to the Thai people.

Sri Lanka Presidential Elections-; SIMHLA VS MINORITIES

A regime change and an end of an era:-

As Sri Lanka presidential election has played a major role of public participation and representation of Sri Lankan Democracy and which is said to be true win of Sri Lankan citizens and a minority government  through a majoritarian democracy of Sri Lanka and has also ended the the term of ex-president of C.MAHINDA RAJAPAKSA who has been successful president of Sri Lank over two successive terms and was also expected to win this elections also. This way this is the major turn where one of his minister MAITHRIPALA SIRISENA who is the Health Minister of that time and a follower of MAHINDA RAJAPAKSA. MAITHRIPALA SIRISENA leaved the party on 21Nov’14.

Situation:- According to Sri Lanka Constitution the normal term of a president in a office is 6 years and can be served for the 2nd term also. In November 2009   RAJAPAKSA government has defeated the Rebel Liberation Tigers Of TAMIL Eelam therefore he called for an election in January 2010 and has continued his office on 19th November 2010. In year mid 2014 RAJAPAKSA would call for a another election to be elected for the 3rd time without completing his tenure. On 20th October 2014 there was a official announcement where elections would held in January 2015. In November 2014 the court allowed to call re-elections and RAJAPAKSA could stand in election as a Presidential candidate of Sri Lanka and the public thought that RAJAPAKSA would win again and rule Sri Lanka in a progressive way as he as he did it before. Suddenly then came MAITHRIPALA SIRISENA who joined the New Democratic Front and their lead to a hot of the topic in Sri Lankan Elections and which was been a turning point in RAJAPAKSA’S career. Then the war started.

Election campaign:- Every party has its own manifesto and RAJAPAKSA has released his manifesto titled Mahinda’s -Vision- The World Winning Path. On 23rd December’14 it placed to introduced a new constitution within a year, a naval force and special security force will be setup for the sea security and judicial enquiry for the war crimes during the last stage of Sri Lankan civil war. MAITHRIPALA SIRISENA had also released his manifesto titled ( A Compassionate Maithri Governance) on 19th December’14 which was more attractive then RAJAPAKSA”S manifesto. As election results were declared, SIRISENA has gained 51.28 percent votes whereas RAJAPAKSA received 47.58 percent votes at the edge.

Where in this election the minorities in Sri Lanka the Tamilians and Muslims had showed the difference and therefore this is said to be minority win in a majority way.

Q. What if SIRISENA would not contest?

Ans. Again RAJAPAKSA would win again without no doubt because he has a good economic growth and development  in Sri Lanka after the defeat of Liberation Tigers Of TAMIL Eelam and in 2009 their was stable growth in Sri Lanka which was appreciated by majority of the people. When MAITHRIPALA SIRISENA has entered into the competition there has been some hope of justice to the minorities which lead to the highest participation  in this presidential election of 2015.Which has became a primary factor for the loss of RAJAPAKSA and win of SIRISENA.

Arakshan

I honestly don’t remember asking any of my elders what reservation was. Considering that “arakshan” is in the news eight out of seven days of the week, I should’ve asked the question anyway at some point of time. But seems like I’ve heard about it since forever, and maybe that’s why, there was never a need to ask.

The whole CONCEPT of reservation in India gets me angry. And so, I might seem biased as you read. I might even be.

Personally, I’ve seen a lot of my cousins fly out to study, or to work. I always asked why. My cousins’ response?  “Well, if I have to get a 107% to get into a reputed institution, or have to be in the 0.01% general category to get a government job, I’d rather go to Somalia.” Sure we would laugh about it, but there was resentment. We all knew it, we all had it. Talk about brain drain.
Reservations were introduced in independent India to battle the caste system. It was introduced to bridge the gap between the so called upper castes and the ‘dalits’. But we forget that it was to be abandoned after a few decades of independence. That would be the government’s job. However, that would mean a massive loss of votes, because well, vote banks. Today, even the financially comfortable ‘scheduled castes’ make use of the reserved facility. They have access to the best facilities, get the best of education, and yet go for the quota. Who wouldn’t if they had the opportunity? Lower qualifications, easy seats. I’ve had friends who’ve availed the same. This was not what the reservations had been introduced for.

Don’t get me wrong here, I’m all for equality and giving opportunity to the disadvantaged. However, I don’t think giving reservations on the basis of ancient caste systems. Reservations should be given. But on one’s economic status, not social.

Reservations were established to do away the differences between the so called upper and lower castes. However, reservations aren’t doing it. If anything, the divide is growing, bigger and stronger, with the resentment that the general caste feels towards them. There’s a need to uplift the masses, there’s a need for quality and this will come through reservation, but not based on some ancient caste system, but based on economic status. We need change. And we need it now.
